I am raising funds and awareness for SUDEP Action.
Our son, Stephen developed epilepsy when he was eighteen, just before going to University, but for most of his life he did not allow it to limit his aspirations and he achieved a full and interesting life travelling and teaching English as a foreign language in the far east and particularly in Taiwan. Sadly, he died suddenly and unexpectedly on 25th June, aged thirty eight.
There are three seizure-related deaths a day in the UK and most of these are sudden and unexpected. Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy (SUDEP) is uncommon but is a recognised syndrome where a person with epilepsy dies suddenly and no other cause of death is revealed. Around half of epilepsy deaths are attributed to SUDEP.
SUDEP Action cares for the bereaved and works with families and professionals to make change, using research and awareness to strive for the answers that will save lives. Epilepsy is one of the top ten causes of early death. SUDEP can be traumatic for families and distressing for professionals, all of whom have questions.
There are five key strands to the work of SUDEP Action:
Providing information on SUDEP and risk in epilepsy;
Offering support when someone has died;
Involving people to help effect change;
Sponsoring research and education to prevent future deaths;
Capturing data across the UK through the Epilepsy Deaths Register.
SUDEP Action is a small but dedicated charity. Please support me and help them do all that they can to prevent unnecessary deaths from epilepsy.
Many thanks,
Gordon
