Story
Even before I was a runner I took it for granted that I had the strength in my legs to stand up from my chair, walk to the kitchen and make myself a cup of tea. I could manage my personal care, and I could walk around the supermarket. These are all everyday tasks that we perform with very little thought or effort, however, for an older person a prolonged stay in hospital can cause their muscles to decondition, ten days of bed rest can lead to the equivalent of ten years muscle aging. I am running the London Marathon to raise funds to purchase therapy resources for Musgrove Park Hospital’s ready to go unit. In the ‘ready to go unit’ on Exmoor ward we work with patients to start their rehabilitation and reablement process while they wait to leave hospital. Sometimes when a patient has pushed themselves more than they have in a while they tell me they feel like they’ve run a marathon, after April 23rd I’ll be able to tell them I know how they feel!
