2010 Great London Swim · 3 July 2010 ·
On July 3rd I will be doing the British Gas Great London Swim. This is a 1 mile swim across the Royal Victoria dock next to the river Thames in London's Docklands. It equates to 64 lengths of a standard 25m pool and I have set myself a target time of 30 minutes.
I have chosen to swim for the Motor Neurone Disease Association because my girlfriend's father died of MND a few years ago. MND is a terminal illness which slowly paralyses its sufferers over time. It is a cruel disease for both sufferers and families which strips individuals of their mobility and speech very rapidly, leaving suffers requiring extensive care. Once diagnosed it is usual to die from MND within 2 years. Although there are many types of the disease not much is known as to why some people are affected. The MND Association are currently funding crucial research, in addition to providing practical support to suffers and their carers, and raising the profile of this little understood disease.
