Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
On August 10 2014 I will be joining thousands of other cyclists, setting off from the Olympic Park to cycle 100 miles through London and out into the Surrey hills, before returning to finish in style on The Mall. Oh and its all against the clock with a maximum of 9 hours to complete the 100 miles!
Later in the day some of the world's top professional cyclists will complete the same course (in a quicker time no doubt!)
Last year's inaguaral event saw over 15,000 cyclists finish the course within the 9 hour time limit and this year 80,000 cyclists applied for places in just a couple of weeks.
I'm proud to be riding as part of the Anthony Nolan team, raising much needed funds for this essential charity. Set up in 1974 as the world's first Bone Marrow Register, Anthony Nolan continues to provide hope to those suffering from blood cancer, matching patients to potential matches on their register.
Its a cause close to my heart. Having lost both an aunt and a school friend to Leukaemia, I know the pain blood cancer can cause. I've been on the donor register for a number of years and a few years ago was identified as a possible strong match for a patient in need of a transplant. Sadly before I was able to donate the patients condition deteriotated but each day Anthony Nolan receive more and more requests to help find a donor.
Although a former cyclist who used to think nothing of riding 100 miles, its been several years since I tackled any distance in the saddle. Riding a route that tested Bradley Wiggins, Mark Cavendish and Chris Froome in the Olympics will therefore be a challenge but one that will hopefully inspire you to dig deep and support this life-saving charity.
It costs £100 to add a new donor to the register - I've pledge to raise at least £650 from the ride - will you help me add more potential life-savers to the list?
Thanks for your support
Glen
