Story
I've been volunteering with Bankside Open Spaces Trust for about 21 months. I'm a volunteer warden and gardener at Crossbones Graveyard and Memorial Garden which is one of the sites that BOST looks after. This site is enjoyed by locals and visitors alike. Local workers eat their lunch here. People visit from all over the world.
Just around the corner is Redcross Gardens which is the garden in the photograph above. This was originally created by the social reformer Octavia Hill as a place for disadvantaged locals to enjoy nature. It had all but disappeared before BOST reclaimed it.
Green spaces like these are so important for our physical and mental wellbeing and there isn't a lot of green space in this part of London. BOST does a great job of looking after these places so please do donate.
Founded in 2000 and working in Southwark and Lambeth, Bankside Open Spaces Trust supports and inspires local people to improve, protect and enjoy green space in disadvantaged inner-city areas. BOST has developed and manages 15 parks and 12 community gardens. BOST aims to put local people at the heart of change in Bankside, bringing communities together as active citizens, whilst making a positive, lasting contribution to the environment.
