The Greyhound Challenge 2012 took place on Saturday 9th June with 40 riders setting off from The Greyhound Hotel at Shap at 9am. The weather was good, dry for the most part of the ride, not too hot and not too windy. After the rain of the past week there were the usual boggy areas and more! Almost all the riders completed the challenge and enjoyed meeting up in the Greyhound Inn, Grizebeck. Well done to all the riders that took part - please give generously to make their efforts even more worthwhile! Thankyou from Gill, Martin, ian and Pete
Origin of the ride: In 2002 a group of five friends from the Grizebeck area planned a brilliant, but very tough, 45 mile mountain bike route through the high fells that link the Greyhound Hotel in Shap, Cumbria, to their local, The Greyhound Inn in Grizebeck. They decided to raise sponsorship to make the day even more worthwhile. Since then more and more friends have joined them with around 40-60 riders taking on the challenge each year. Over 11 years they have raised more than £15,000, predominantly for North West Air Ambulance. Some prefer to follow a road route, also a fantastic 46 mile route; a few have taken on a 100 mile full circuit from Grizebeck to Shap and back, taking in Kirkstone Pass and the A6 Shap summit! If you would like to know more about The Greyhound Challenge please contact Martin on pathways.walks@btinternet.com . Please note, all riders ride as independent individuals and must be self-sufficient. This is a tough route only for experienced and fit mountain bikers capable of ridng independently.
