Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

There are a number of reasons why The Cardiff & Vale Charity has become my charity of choice for 2018.

It was difficult for me to decide which department / ward I wanted my donations to go to. In the end I looked at who has made this journey and year of activity possible for me and have therefore chosen CAVOC (Cardiff and Vale Orthopaedic Centre) and Hafan y Coed (Haven of Trees) Adult Mental Health Unit at Llandough Hospital.

Many of you will already be aware of the physical and mental battles which I have faced over the years and I will be forever grateful for the amazing NHS staff who have put me back together.

After 11 knee operations, I have been told that I am now ‘out performing my knees’. Surgeons at CAVOC have enabled me to run again after an anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction, multiple cartilage operations, a tumour removal and a tibial osteotomy. As a frustrated sportsperson, I know that I could not have been an easy patient, not knowing at the time I was smashing my knees as a form of self harm.

Let’s hope I am confidently skipping into my review appointment later in the year.

Mentally, I have been given another opportunity, another chance of life after being on the edge of ending it on many occasions. On two occasions I ended up in hospital. The first time was in October 2016 after being picked up on a beach by my police colleagues. The second time was after taking too many tablets. My GP has been incredible as well as all of the NHS services that I have been put in touch with.

I want to put something back into the local community. Hafan y Coed  ‘Our Orchard’ is a unique space within the hospital grounds open to the community. It is a place where patients and staff can get away from the hospital smell and the noisy wards, and be outside in the fresh air with their visitors.

The events I have completed so far in 2018 are:

  • London Big Vitality half marathon
  • London marathon
  • Barry Island sprint triathlon
  • Cardiff olympic triathlon
  • Velothon Wales
  • Tenby Long course weekend (2.4 mile sea swim)
  • Tenby Long course weekend (112 mile bike)
  • Tenby Long course weekend (Half marathon)
  • Barry 10k
  • Ironman Wales
  • Swim The Serpentine

Left to do:

Cardiff half marathon

Each event has and will continue to test me both physically and mentally. I thank each and everyone of you who has supported me on my journey.

Thank you in advance for your donation.

Georgie xx
