Story
Are you all sitting down? . . . because . . . I am attempting to run the London Marathon this year! No, you are not dreaming. Those of you who know me well will know that I am not athletic and certainly not a runner – up to this point I have lived by the mantra that ‘I would only ever run if there was someone behind me with an axe’.
Well, the ‘axe’ is, metaphorically speaking, currently being wielded by my brother-in-law, Henry Adams. I thought that if he could walk to the South Pole in 2008, I could run through London for the same cause – The Shackleton Foundation.
This cause is a great one. The charity was set up in 2008 and the expedition to the South Pole in that same year was its first major fund raising event. Inspired by the leadership and example of 20th century explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton, The Shackleton Foundation supports inspirational leaders wishing to make a difference, in particular to the less advantaged. (See www.shackletonfoundation.org)
Thomas Pynchon wrote “Everyone has an Antartic”. The Foundation exists to support and encourage people who may not otherwise have the opportunity to identify and cross their own Antartic, particularly where the applicant’s chosen project can be shown to directly benefit the less advantaged.
So, this is ‘my Antartic’. The training is certainly the most challenging thing I have done in my life and I am really delighted to be raising money for such a worthwhile cause. I do love a challenge, I will always be more of a tortoise than a hare and I would be very grateful if any of you would consider sponsoring me.
Thank you – and roll on 18th April!
