Story
I am running for the Alzheimer's Society because it is something close to my heart. My Nanna had Alzheimer's disease and as a young girl every time I saw her a little bit of her would disappear. Towards the end she could no longer hold a conversation, had no idea who her family were or even feed herself. We were lucky to have a strong support network in our family back then there were limited support services in the community. But even so my family rallied around and ensured that even in the late stages of the disease Nanna was there at all the family occasions. There are many people out there that are not as lucky or receive any support.
Seeing the strength, love and care my family showed for my Nanna led me to work in the NHS. I currently work as an Occupational Therapist on a Dual Frailty Ward. The ward provides care and support for people with dementia and cognitive impairment whilst they are in hospital. People living with dementia are often forgotten and misunderstood. I hope that my few hours of discomfort running the marathon can help to raise money to improve awareness, support and research for people living with dementia and their families.
