Gayton Pupils to Raise Funds by Running Seven Marathons in a Single Day
On Thursday 9 January 2020 (changed from original date of 17 December 2019) pupils and parents from Gayton Primary School in Wirral are to take on the ambitious challenge of running seven marathons in one day to raise funds for their school. It will be mainly the children completing this challenge aged just 4-11 years old.
Using the Gayton Primary’s own marked ‘one mile circuit’ within the playground, children from Reception to Year 6 can take part in the fundraising challenge by running anything upwards from a single mile, with the aim to run up a combined total of 183.4 miles.
Parents will be able to join in to top up the total at the end of the school day (or more if possible to raise even more money!) and children are already looking forward to cheering on the adults.
The festive fundraising challenge was masterminded by the school’s own PTA organisation, with the aim to raise £2,000 to get active together and to work hard by taking on this fantastic challenge.
The school receives limited funding and requires vital learning materials such a phonics books, maths equipment, guided reading books, iPads, musical instruments. All of this is to be purchased for the school via important fundraising carried out by the PTA.
Headteacher at Gayton Primary School,, Mrs Jennie McAleny, said:
“We’re all so excited to get started on our festive ‘7 Marathon Challenge.’ The children are particularly keen to persuade teachers and parents to get their trainers on and join in, to top up the miles. Our PTA works hard to come up with creative and fun-filled ideas and the funds raised will be used to buy additional equipment and resources, so will directly benefit the children.”
The challenge was completed and the children went above and beyond actually completing 19.6 marathons running a combined total of 516.2 miles!
Thank you to everyone who has supported Gayton Primary PTA and donated and also to all of our amazing children for taking part.
