Gary Maclennan and Paul Paterson have been riding bikes together since late primary school almost four decades ago. It was in their teenage years that they originally got Fantic 200’s and longed to do the world famous SSDT on them.
Fast forward 35 years and their lifelong ambition will become a reality - with entries secured for the SSDT 2022, they’re preparing to ride this year’s event on their Fantics! 👍🏼
In the last 20 years Gary and Paul have accumulated 35 SSDT finishes between them. Opinions are split on whether they can make it over this year’s finish line on their 40 year-old machines… This sparked their idea to raise money for charity whilst taking on the challenge.
Vigorous training has now begun and the boys are pushing themselves to new extremes - Paul has decided to sell his e-bike and has bought an indoor Peloton bike. He’s currently trying to figure out how to attach a wider seat🤔 Gary’s getting up at 6am every morning to kickstart his day with 30 minutes of yoga and a cold water swim (beware Achintore Road😶) They’re both now even jogging to and from the shops for their carryouts 😮👏🏼
Jokes aside (and there will certainly be plenty!) they’re hoping to raise money for the Macmillan nurses / Macmillan Cancer Support. Gary has unfortunately needed their assistance with the ongoing care of his wife Christina, and through Gary Paul himself has been a friend and work colleague of Christina since their late teens.
