"A once thriving country sitting on the world’s largest oil reserves, Venezuela has suffered a precipitous decline over the past two decades. There are drastic shortages of both food and medicines and diseases such as diphtheria and malaria are re-emerging. State hospitals, in particular, are suffering because of lack of maintenance and scarcity of medical supplies."
In recent times this has become a reality for me. I have experienced first hand the increasing struggles that my family have faced in gaining access to basic medical supplies.
My cousin had a terrible accident and nearly died after being hit by a 13.800 voltage line at work. He suffered extensive burns throughout his body and head and will probably never fully recover from them. The situation in the local hospital was awful; my family were required to bring their own bandages and needles to perform basic first aid for him. Getting the prescribed antibiotics was almost an impossible task... this is just one personal case of many other in the country.
My Dad suffers with high blood pressure. My mum suffers from Vertigo and strong migraines. My Grandmother has chest problems. My other Grandmother and great Aunt have recently both been diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease. We cannot find any medicines in the country for any of them. Fortunately, my family have relatives, like me, who live abroad, who have eventually found ways to send medicines over to them, first trying to locate a supply and then finding someone to courier them. Sadly, however, for at least 80% of the country, this luxury is just not viable and those who live in real poverty do not even stand a chance of obtaining access to such medical supplies. This is heartbreaking.
As you can imagine, being in good health is now the priority for people in Venezuela, as any medical requirement can lead to a matter of life or death.
For a long time, I have wanted to be able to do something about this situation, not only for my family, but for the many other families that are watching loved ones suffer. Then I found out about this amazing charity. Healing Venezuela are a UK-based charity whose mission is to support the country by sending medical supplies, sponsoring high spec medical equipment and implementing mental health programmes. One of the best things about this charity is that any raised funds go directly, in the way of medical aid, to those in need in the country.
I hope and pray this situation will change soon. In the meantime, I need your support to help Healing Venezuela help others. Thank you for taking the time to read this and for your support.
P.s. I’m not a runner and have dodgy knees, so show your kindness! ;)
