Story
Frühstück: noun; German for breakfast.
“We are more alike my friends, than we are unalike” Maya Angelou
Background
Frühstück 2020 is an art concept celebrating the similarities and differences in the world’s cultures through the medium of breakfast ingredients. This speaks to a love of food, culture and human behaviour.
Most people and cultures will break the fast at some point in the morning with a nutritious meal, and breakfast heaven for one person on an empty stomach, may be another person’s breakfast hell. You never know until you try, and the fun is in the discovery and I’d argue, the sharing.
A coffee for one, a sausage for another; seafood porridge, baked beans, curry, Vegemite or, dare I say it, a cigarette. Breakfast is such a great way to understand a person or a culture, and I believe it’s so important that we share what makes our cultures and experiences unique and remain open to discovery with a sense of compassion.
The Process
In July I invited my community of friends and family to let me know their favourite breakfast item, so that I could incorporate them into a piece of art. My plan was to then enter the piece into The Lockdown Collection - an exhibition taking place at the Department Store in my local neighbourhood of Brixton, London.
I had a tremendous response and included as many of the items into the piece of art as possible, which you can find on my instagram: @thecolourofsplash (check out the post on the 2 September and subsequent posts to see the final piece).
I'm delighted to announce that Fruhstuck has been accepted into the Lockdown Collective Exhibition which is taking place at Downstairs at The Department Store in Brixton from the 9 - 20 July 2021.
I still need your help!
It's not too late to contribute though!
I’m asking those who feel inclined to donate the value you’d spend on breakfast to The Hunger Project (more information below) to somewhat offset the use of real food in this piece of art. When doing so please continue to let us know what your favourite breakfast item is as we will be including them on post it notes which surround the piece.
