I am part of a lucky team who have been selected to travel abroad with Girlguiding LaSER in 2016, to carry out a service project in Haiti. It will be an incredible, once in a lifetime opportunity, to experience new cultures and environments, challenge our perceptions of economically developing countries,  understand the dynamics of community volunteering at an international level and to work ‘outside of our comfort zone’.

We'll be supporting a community and grassroots organisation working with young people on an environmental sustainability service project in Haiti. The team are committed to using volunteer and service companies that promote sustainability and development in line with community-identified needs. We have approached a volunteer organisation that aims to “foster civic engagement and community development and focus on clean drinking water, education, and the environment.”

The service project we hope to be part of emphasises their work with grassroots local organisations, something that is particularly important to the group, as we are keen that any service project supports the local efforts already taking place.

Although we are currently in the midst of organising our itinerary, we hope to participate in a programme such as the following: 

• Educate the community (especially kids) about the importance of clean water
• Help improve water issues and the environment by planting trees
• Painting murals at schools where we have filters to celebrate our collaboration

To raise the £3200 needed, I will be holding many small charity sales and events and applying for grants but any small donations would be greatly appreciated as this is a lot to raise. Thank you!
