Story
16 million people in East Africa are on the brink of death.
East Africa is facing a catastrophe - without our support, 16 million face imminent death. A severe drought, conflict and economic conditions have brought in a famine unlike one in modern history.
800,000 children under five are acutely malnourished. More than 1.4 million children face the threat of starving to death and 5.5 million are in danger. These are not just statistics, these are innocent children.
Water is scarce. 19.5 million across East Africa don't have a regular supply of safe drinking water. After three consecutive years of failed rains, the bones of livestock lay waste all around.
Small, fragile children rest uneasily in hospital beds, semi-conscious, with a drip attached to their severely malnourished bodies to keep them alive. Many others are so hungry, they're forced to eat leaves. Thousands of families, dehydrated after days of walking in search of some water, may die on route.
6.2 million Somalis – more than half the population – are in need of urgent humanitarian assistance. 2.9 million are at risk of famine and 140,000 children are acutely malnourished.
We have weeks left until millions may perish. We can't let this happen.
