I'm not a cyclist, and until July I hadn't ever cycled further than 10 miles. Alas, I've accidentally organised and volunteered to ride in a charity ride for my company VoucherCodes.co.uk. This will be a 3 day ride covering 220 miles with 30 of my fellow employees between our London and Paris offices from 25th to the 27th September. I didn't really intend to get involved in the cycling part of this project, I just wanted to sit in the support van eating Mars bars, but there we go.
We are raising money for a very worthy charity - Independent Age. This charity aim to help elderly people keep active. Following the ride, I will also be taking part in a volunteering project, visiting an elderly person a few times a month. We will be buying them iPads to help keep them connected and stave off loneliness in the run-up to Christmas.
Some people have doubted the worthiness of this charity. I looked at quite a few charities to work with on this project and Independent Age really stood out, as we can make a real difference by raising money for them.
An estimated 5.3 million 65+ year olds in the UK have never been online and 3.8 million live alone. As an internet company, we want to make a difference to the lives of people in this part of the community by supporting the charity, buying their members iPads and using our knowledge to train their members on using the internet and staying connected in an increasingly digital age. Having something as small as an iPad could help stave off loneliness and help put elderly people back in touch with family and friends.
Any donation to help me hit my fundraising target and support our volunteering project will be greatly appreciated. This is a project that I've been working on for months, so if we could make our target, it'd be hugely appreciated. THANK YOU!
