Raising money in memory of my Mum - Angela Hawksley
My mum, Angela, had breast cancer at the age of 54. She underwent a mastectomy, chemotherapy and radiotherapy. For the next twelve years she remained clear of cancer. She was then diagnosed with 'aggressive endometrial cancer'. Despite knowing that there would be no cure for it, she underwent chemotherapy again in the hope that it would possibly shrink the tumour and allow her to maintain a reasonable quality of life. At the time we thought its growth might be halted. However, despite four or five rounds of chemotherapy, the cancer had spread.
Mum was not one to complain or even admit that she was dying. Her attitude was 'Well.....you just get on with it ....don't you?'.
Throughout her life Mum was a carer. Caring for my disabled sister, Frances and my Dad, who had diabetes (and later on a stroke which also left him in a wheelchair). She always put others first, even when diagnosed with cancer. She carried on 'as normal' for as long as was possible.
Christine worked with Mum at Shopmobility in Chesterfield and they became firm friends, sharing a love of music and passionate about meeting the needs of people who had accessibility issues.
Chris and I will be doing the 'Race for Life' together in Sheffield. Chris will be in a powered wheelchair whilst I 'run' alongside her. We may not be fast but we intend to enjoy it!
We want to raise what we can because we cared for her and she placed a lot of value on charities such as 'Cancer Research UK' and 'Macmillan' - both who offered support during her life and her illness.
Please give generously and help us to reach our target.
