George’s wish was that, when the time came, if anyone would like to honour his memory,  a small donation be made to the FND Research Group (based at Edinburgh University), rather than floral (or other tributes).

George had very personal reasons for supporting research. Those who knew him well will also be aware how this condition adversely affects one of his beloved grand-daughters and how he wanted to do more to help others.

His friends will also know and appreciate how much this “true gentleman”, as he has been described by many, gave of himself to charities throughout his life, and how much he would have appreciated any donation, no matter how small.

How will funds be used?

The Functional Neurological Disorder (FND) research group at the University of Edinburgh, led by Prof Jon Stone and Prof Alan Carson, are a world leading group, studying this common, disabling but neglected condition. The team are incredibly grateful for direct donations which they always use wholly for FND research and tools which have direct patient benefit. They don’t use these funds for overheads, personal travel or conferences.

Currently, the group is raising funds to help develop the neurosymptoms FND guide website and app. The website and App are a lifeline for those living with this debilitating and life-changing condition. Continued development of the guide (which does not receive public funding) will enable new free individualised education and treatment/self-management packages as well as make a research platform for people with FND. This means people with FND around the world should be able to access better basic information about their condition and take part in research if they want to.
