Fundraising for RMA - The Royal Marines Charity
Story
Five years ago, Ant Lambert and Louis Nethercott (The Mad Explorers) conceived a unique concept for an expedition; To be the first humans to have crossed the five largest islands on earth, unsupported, using only human power.
EXPEDITION FIVE
The idea was epic in its audacity; the five islands are; Greenland, New Guinea, Borneo, Madagascar and Baffin Island. Each of these cover a vast range of extreme environments, not to mention being home to some of the last true wildernesses left on Earth.
This adventure is something they wanted to do first and foremost; however, they believed whatever platform was gained doing this exclusive endeavour should be used towards something other than their own gain. To that end it was decided the public platform should be used towards generating funds and awareness for The Royal Marines Charity.
Louis, who was medically discharged from the Royal Marines after being involved in several extremely traumatic incidences in Afghanistan left him with severe Post Traumatic Stress Disorder has seen first-hand the major role these charities play in rebuilding peoples.
Their aim has always been to use the story of their journey to help inspire veterans who have been in similar situations and found themselves outside of the military, separated from their tribe and lacking purpose in their lives.
To date, the pair have completed four out of five of their journeys with only Baffin Island left to conquer.
This however looks set to be the most difficult of their journeys so far, and considering to date they have faced; being lost in the jungle, crossing numerous rivers populated with salt water crocodiles, armed gangs, pirates, desserts, the bubonic plague, frost bite and snow blindness to mention a few you can appreciate they do not say this lightly. The route planned across Baffin Island is completely unproven and will include traverses of the largest island lake on earth, a journey of hundreds of kilometres along a frozen river, and the ascent, traverse and descent of the Penny Ice Cap in total almost 700kilometres and 2000m of ascent across truly inspiring, dangerous terrain.
