Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page!
I never thought I would say this, but I am running my second marathon at the Schneider Electric Marathon de Paris on the 3rd April 2022.
This time I wanted to run for a charity making an impact in the environment and have chosen to run for a charity called Sand Dams Worldwide (previously Excellent Development) which helps support rurual, dryland communities by building sand dams - the most cost-effective way to ensure that rainwater does not escape the drylands.
Initially I thought - how effective can a Sand Dam be? - as it turns out, very! To save you the research I've listed some of the key benefits here:
- Stops season rainstorm from washing away vital topsoil, quickly drying the land further.
- Dam stops the water and over a few days becomes sand which stops the water from evaporating and naturally filters it into clean water
- Through collecting the water, the community does not need to walk miles for clean water as pipes built into the dam convert this into drinking water.
- Less time collecting water means that the community has more time to farm the land and more water means they can grow more trees helping the environment to flourish
- Socio-economic benefits for local community due to less time collecting clean water (e.g. children can spend more time in school, women can spend more time growing food and crops etc).

I hope I've convinced you all to give a dam and welcome any donations!
