Erl was diagnosed with cancer of the oesophagus, aged 77,  in September 2021 and was treated by the Beatson Cancer Hospital in Glasgow. His chemotherapy has now ended and he will now continue to receive a three weekly dose of the drug Herceptin, which will allow him to live a normal life. 

Running and cycling have always been a passion in Erl's life and throughout his chemotherapy, he was able to manage to maintain being active in this way.

Donald and Erl have been running and cycling together for almost forty years. Since retiring they have embarked on several major cycling trips together, such as Glasgow to San Ginesio, Italy (3300km), Berlin to Warsaw (over 700km) and others running through a variety of European countries such as France, Germany, Austria, Hungary and Slovakia. 

The friends have been planning a trip from IJmuiden, the port of Amsterdam  to Hamburg, a distance of approximately 550km, for several years however it had to be postponed several times due to Covid19 and then latterly, when Erl was diagnosed with cancer.
