Story
My grandma is my only living grandparent remaining, but sadly, dementia means that she's not the woman she once was. She doesn't know who anyone is, where she is or what one day, month or year is from the next. It is heart-breaking for me and all my family to see.
Our family are not alone. There are almost 1 million people in the UK with dementia, whose quality of life are significantly marginalised. Growing old when your mind is rapidly and uncontrollably deteriorating is confusing, testing and challenging for both the individual and their loved ones.
Sadly investment in dementia research remains low, surprising given it is the leading cause of death in the UK and costs the UK economy £24 billion each year, more than cancer and heart disease combined.
I am running the London Marathon to raise money for Alzheimer's Research UK, who are on a mission to bring about the first life-changing dementia treatment by 2025. They are on the brink of their break-through and your support could help in the following ways.
- £20 pays for 1 hour of pioneering dementia research
- £25 will help keep the Dementia Research Infoline open, so relatives can get the right information when they need it
- £100 can pay for a state-of-the-art imaging system to understand how brain cells interact
- £250 will map 10,000 genes in minute detail to create new treatments
I would be so grateful if you're able to show your support to Alzheimer's Research UK. Running the London Marathon is going to be the hardest physical challenge I've ever taken on. So having people behind me and my Grandma means the world. Thank you <3
