Story

Hola y gracias for visiting my fundraising page!

On Saturday, 25 February 2017, the staff, interns, and volunteers of the GVI Playa Del Carmen, Mexico projects will be taking on the streets of Bosque Real with garbage bags and gloves for a Clean Up Playa del Carmen day! The goal is to clean up our local streets, which are consistently littered with trash and rubbish, due to the lack of public bins in the area. Hopefully from a few hours of sustained efforts from the GVI family, we can restore the streets to their natural beauty, and people will think twice about where they put their rubbish!

Our goal is to raise $3,000 USD through fundraising for our projects: Escuelita (CEIA), Coco’s Animal Welfare, Ludoteca, Corazones and Contando con un Amigo.

Escuelita (CEIA), is the special needs school formed by two mothers where they work with children and their own family members with different needs like autism, down syndrome, and cerebral palsy. From giving the children different types of therapies, to skills for socializing and being independent, the time and energy the staff spend on this school is simply breathtaking and inspiring. The money raised, $500USD, is going to be used to help fund the music therapy, physical and sensual therapies. The more specialized the therapies are the more expensive they become, so we want to help them to support the kids in all the possible areas.

The second project, Coco’s Animal Welfare, is an organization dedicated to reducing and controlling the stray cat and dog population of Playa del Carmen and the Riviera Maya. They provide a free sterilization service for stray cats and dog and a low cost for those with owners. Since their beginnings in 2009 they have sterilized over 16,000 animals and rescued and adopted over a 1,000. The next $500USD of fundraising will be used for sutures and tic & flea medication. With the amount of dogs and cats going in and out each and every day, they go through a lot of materials to help these animals at a low, or no cost, and the money raised will be used very practically in supporting them with materials necessary for their work.

At Ludoteca, our project in partnership with Save the Children, we give English classes and Green Action classes to the kids as well as helping them with their homework and playing games! For this project we will donate $300USD towards clean drinking water for the kids and staff to drink throughout the day at Ludoteca and also toward to supply them with adequate material for the kids education.

Corazones, is the project were we give English Classes, Hygiene Classes and workshops for the women adults. It is situated at a vulnerable area, in a community living in extreme conditions of Playa del Carmen. From our fundraising goal, $700USD is going to be spent on providing them with clean drinking water, along with good material for classes and workshops.

Contando con un amigo, is our partner which adopted a land similar as Corazones. For this CT event, we have most of our fundraising goal going towards Contando con un Amigo, as we are planning on building a new classroom for them so that they will have more learning space for the kids who attend school there. They require $20 000 mexican pesos for the classroom, so $1000 USD of the money raised is going to be used for this goal, with the small amount extra used to provide them with requirements such as toys, material for classes and proper food.

Any remaining donations will be spent towards materials and any necessary resource, stationary, assets that come with the running of all the projects.

So the challenge will involve the following:

GVI volunteers, interns, and staff will take the streets of Playa del Carmen, starting at 8AM, collectively putting in over 30 hours on our Saturday morning, and combing through the streets from Bosque Real all the way to the beach, in an effort to make this litter-filled area, litter-free. By doing this we will hopefully be able to show the inhabitants of this area how nice of a community that it has the potential to be, as well as persuading them to dispose of their litter (and recyclables) correctly.

Every donation makes a difference! No matter how big or small, we the volunteers and our fantastic partners in Escuelita, Coco’s, Ludo, Corazones and Contando con un amigo will be forever grateful.

Thank you for the support- Gracias por su apoyo!
