Story
On the 6th of May 2002 I was a fit and healthy 12 year old who was taken ill suddenly and without warning. A virus had attacked my heart causing Dilated Cardiomyopathy leading to sudden heart failure. In order to save my life I was rushed to Great Ormond Street Hospital by a police escorted ambulance and placed on a life support machine to keep me alive. The doctors hoped that my heart would recover but my heart was too damaged and after 9 days I was placed at the top of the UK European Transplant list and was fortunate enough to receive a heart transplant the same day. My recovery was slow and harrowing and I was finally discharged two months later in a wheelchair. Through this wonderful gift I have been able to return to a normal life and I am forever grateful to my donor and their family for saving my life.
Since then I have been extremely active competing in numerous British and World Transplant Games collecting a various number of medals. This time I am participating with a number of transplant recipients in the Tough Mudder, a 10 mile obstacle race designed to test physical strength and mental grit.
The Harefield Transplant Club's objectives are to provide for the relief of persons, their family and carers who have had or are waiting for an organ transplant through support, recreational and sporting activities in order to rehabilitate those and improve their life.
We are examples of how transplantation can improve lives and it is important to show it's benefits.Through fundraising we are able to keep this club alive.
