On the 22nd April 2003, aged 32, my brother Chrissie, took his own life. He was a father, a husband, a son, a brother, an uncle, a friend and many more things to many people. To say we were heart broken, and still are, doesn't begin to cover it. He took his life on our mam's birthday, almost 7 months after she died from cancer. The effect this had on our community was not only devastating, but also far reaching and sadly he was not the only young man to take his own life in our community at that time. It has taken many years for me to process the loss of my brother and it seems fitting that on the 20th anniversary of his death, that we do something to remember him by and celebrate who he was to us. We also know the alarming statistics of male suicide and want to raise awareness and also some money for Andysmanclub.
Andy'smanclub are a men's suicide prevention charity, offering free-to-attend peer-to-peer support groups across the UK and online. They want to end the stigma surrounding men's mental health and help men through the power of conversation #IT'SOKAYTOTALK . I wish everyday that Chrissie had found something like this, so we could have still had him in our lives today.
At the time of writing this, there are 4 of us confirmed who are doing the whole 96 miles over 5 days. Me, Douglas, Craig Marshall and Craig Rafferty - we are hoping more will join us for it all, but we will be joined by Tamara and Natalaigh on the last 2 days (their support will be hugely welcome) and hopefully my girls and Hayley will support us for the final few miles which will get us over the finishing line! Any family, friend, people who knew Chrissie or even if you just want to help raise awareness and fancy a 96 mile jaunt, a day stroll or even a few miles then feel free to join us. We will start the walk on 18th of April and finish on the 22nd of April.
Any donation, however big or small will be gratefully received.
