Story
I have been given an amazing opportunity to go to Lira, Uganda, with a small group of other healthcare professionals from Poole Hospital as part of the Poole Africa Link. We will be carrying out a 2-week trip to the Lira Regional Referral Hospital and the Lira University where we will teach Doctors, Nurses, Midwifes and students essential healthcare skills and knowledge to increase the standard of care available in this developing area.
Those of you that know me well will know that I am hugely passionate,
and I absolutely LOVE my job! I have always wanted to be part of a trip such as this where I can really make a difference and help people in need of such basic skills and knowledge. My role within the team will be to teach physiotherapy interventions which are vital in the care and safety of patients. These include respiratory physiotherapy to prevent and treat respiratory complications, patient positioning to prevent the development of pressure sores and Women’s Health Physiotherapy to reduce the prevalence of obstetric fistulas during pregnancy, which are known to be a debilitating and isolating complication which is almost entirely preventable.
In the build up to the trip I will be working hard to create resources such as leaflets, videos, exercise sheets and positioning charts so that the skills learnt can be incorporated into their daily care and continued even once we have left.
The Poole Africa Link is supported but not funded by Poole Hospital. The team volunteer to go in their own time and fundraising plays a vital part to allow this amazing work to happen. Without the generosity and support of people like you we would not be able to continue this vital link between Poole and Uganda. Thank you for taking a look at my page, and if you able to support me on this trip I would be hugely appreciative.
Internet permitting, I hope to keep a blog and post pictures throughout the trip, so you can see what we are up to and follow our story!
Thank you!!!
Emily
