Story
Well I did it! In 2 hours, 6 minutes and 56 seconds. Transpires I had failed to use my fancy running watch properly and I went into the race thinking I had already run the distance in 2 hours. The reality was that I had run just 11 miles in that time! There was a wonderful atmosphere on the day and I hope to keep on running (once I recover from the decrepitude).
I started jogging 7 months ago in an effort to get fit after having a baby. Before the half marathon I'd run one race - a 5K (3.1 miles) in 34:28.
A half marathon presented a massive challenge and what better motivator than to raise money for the Alzheimer's Society - an excellent charity that provides much needed support and information to people with dementia, their carers, families and friends. I know through personal experience the devasting impact this disease has on the person themselves and their family as my Dad has lived with dementia for over ten years having been diagnosed in his mid-50s. He would be very proud (and more than a little flabbergasted!) that I ran 13.1 miles in quite a respectable time for a novice.
