I am cycling from Manchester to Blackpool in July to raise money for The Christie; a cancer hospital in Manchester. My Dad, Eric, was treated for cancer at Christies hospital many years ago. He was a competitive cyclist in the 1960s and was mad enough to do 24 hour time trials. He was cycling at the time when they were trying to beat the 500 mile barrier for 24 hours, so the 60 miles that I will be doing seems quite insignificant.... That said, I have only been cycling regularly since January this year and my current PB is 56 miles on a flat course so 60 miles with a few hills in the way will feel quite a challenge!

As a science teacher who has dabbled in research in the past, I strongly feel that cancer research should be well-funded so that we can reduce the effect that cancer has on future generations. The Christie is a hospital that participates in cancer research and I wish to raise as much money as I can to help them with their work.

Having joined a cycling club in January of this year, I was looking for a challenge for this summer; my competitive nature means I like to have something to work towards. I decided that I would like to do a sportive and spotted the Manchester-Blackpool ride; I was delighted to see that it was in aid of The Christie so here I am - slowly improving my cycling mileage and hoping to convince you to donate some money to the cause!
