Story

Each donation for this Project will be matched 1:2 by EBRD through EBRD Community Initiative Program.

This fundraiser is supporting the following initiatives by Nova Ukraine NGO:

  • Emergency Support to communities suffered from Nova Kakhovka dam destruction: Nova Ukraine shall provide evacuation support and emergency support to civilians affected by destruction of Nova Kakhovka dam. Thousands of civilians now lost homes and are left with no means due to flooding of 80+ towns in the area.
  • Educational Support in Frontline Communities: Nova Ukraine is building “Computerised Learning Centres” for children living in frontline communities. Through this initiative, they attempt to help restore education in war-affected communities until permanent school infrastructure is recovered. The NGO finances laptops, Starlink kits, and essential equipment to facilitate continued education. Additionally, they support teachers and others who play a crucial role in helping children study.
  • Support for Visually Impaired Kids: Nova Ukraine will work with a special needs school in Zaporizhia in order to help them upgrade their facilities to better cater for the needs of visually impaired children, namely in relation to awareness and safety. The NGO will (i) build a sensory room, (ii) build a specialized outdoor playground with different surfaces (paths of asphalt, grass, soil, sand, curbs, etc. plus a traffic light) both of which are operated by a facilitator. Additionally, the NGO will (iii) fund a 15-day summer camp for 55 of these children at their own school.
  • Medical Equipment: Nova Ukraine is identifying priority needs to help medical facilities acquire much needed equipment. A few examples of shortlisted requests is provided below, although the NGO is trying to finance many more parallel initiatives:
    1. Donetsk: Acquisition of a portable X-ray machine (c. $38k) to help treat the wounded at a field hospital near the Bahmut area.
    2. Vinnytsia: Purchase of surgical instruments (c. $40k) for a hospital in Vinnytsia that specializes in treating complex thermal and thermobaric trauma victims (injuries from burns or burns plus shock waves).  There are many patients with severe burn injuries in Ukraine, and their treatment requires specialized types of plastic and reconstructive surgery, which in turn requires a particular kind of surgical instruments used for debridement and reconstruction of burns.
    3. Zakarpattia: Purchase of a dedicated machine (c. $46k) for a rehabilitation centre in Uzhgorod that treats patients with dysphagia (dysphagia means "cannot swallow"). This is a particular type of equipment to help rehabilitate wounded who lost the ability to swallow due to injuries, teaching them how to swallow again.
    4. Kyiv: Purchase of specialized equipment for the ENT department of the Ohmadet Children's Hospital in Kyiv. The NGO will fund equipment needed to diagnose and treat children who lost their hearing.

About Nova Ukraine:

Nova Ukraine is a nonprofit organization established in 2014 in response to the Russian occupation of Crimea and the initial invasion of Donbas.  Dedicated to providing aid to Ukraine at this time of conflict and hardship, Nova Ukraine engages a driven team of volunteers on the ground in Ukraine and in the United States.  Their work touches all aspects of the humanitarian crisis, including the procurement of important medical equipment, delivery of supplies and food stuff, and the coordination of efforts to help Ukrainians who were forcefully and unlawfully deported to Russia to return to Ukraine or allied countries.  Tens of millions of dollars have been raised to support these projects, with more than 98% of the funds going directly to humanitarian aid.
