Story
This is the account of one GP, passionate about mental health, and his moustache. That is, it is about him and his moustache. And his passion for mental health. Although he is also passionate about his moustache. I'll start again.
It cant have passed your attention that in recent years the month of November has become associated with Men's Health and the growing of facial hair. I'm particularly concerned to be raising awareness of and money for men's mental health issues. Mental health problems kill more men every year than testicular cancer via suicide and create a greater burden of disease than testicular and prostate cancer combined. In addition:
• Three-quarters of suicides in the UK are by men.
• Men are far less likely than women to seek help with medical problems.
• Depression occurs as often in men as in women, but women are twice as likely to be diagnosed and treated.
• Men make up 94 per cent of the UK prison population, which has far higher levels of mental distress than the general population.
• One in nine adult men is dependent on alcohol; men are three times more likely than women to be alcohol dependent.
• Schizophrenia tends to have an earlier onset in men and is associated with poorer outcomes than in women.
That's why I am raising money for the Welsh Mental Health charity Hafal. Hafal provides holistic support to people with mental health problems focusing on recovery through address stigma, social support, accessing timely and appropriate psychological treatments, housing and employment.
