Thanks for taking the time to visit this page.

The Dr Katharine Giles Fund supports the Association of British Science Writers (ABSW) Award for the best popular article written by a scientist or engineer*, named in Katharine's memory.

Congratulations the 2022 winner Bonnie Waring, Imperial College, London for her article "There aren’t enough trees in the world to offset society’s carbon emissions – and there never will be" in The Conversation. Bonnie is Senior Lecturer at the Grantham Institute on Climate Change and the Environment.

Dr Katharine Giles was a research fellow based at the Centre for Polar Observation and Measurement at University College London. She was carrying out ground-breaking work into the interactions between sea-ice cover, wind patterns and ocean circulation. She was tragically killed in a traffic accident in Central London on 8th April 2013.

Katharine had a popular website and blogs of her Arctic and Antarctic missions, she was a co-author and co-presenter of the 2006 IET Faraday Lecture "Emission Impossible - Can Technology Save the Planet?" presenting live to many thousands of young people, she provided an "Ice Scientist" career profile for the Institute of Physics and was a stylish role model.

Giles Bay 65°32’S, 65°42’W, at the northern end of Renaud Island, Biscoe Islands, Antarctica was named for Katharine in December 2020.
