Story
Hi - I am running the London Marathon for a second time on Sunday, April 13th 2014.
I am running again to help raise money for Brain Tumour Research, which funds research into the prevention and treatment of this cancer.
We have lost at least four members of our family to brain tumours:
- My Grandma, Beryl, who died at the age of 65;
- Her son, my Uncle Martin, who was 44;
- Beryl’s sister Monica, who was 40; and
- Monica’s grandson, Matthew, who was just 23 when he died.
Research has yet to prove that there is any genetic cause for brain tumours, or to find a cause, or how to prevent or cure them. Funding for this kind of research is very poor.
But brain tumours are an extremely common cancer.
- Brain tumours kill more children than any other cancer - or any other disease
- Brain tumours kill more people under 40 than any other cancer
Nevertheless, brain tumour research receives just 0.7% of the funding for cancer research in the UK.
Last year, some incredibly generous donations, helped boost my fundraising to around £3,200. I'd love to be able do the same again and to help contribute to Brain Tumour Research's 7 million pound annual target.
Once again I will be running the marathon for my Grandma, Uncle Martin, Monica and Matthew; and for several other family members and friends who have been diagnosed with brain tumours.
Thanks
Dom
