Story

We all know people who have been diagnosed and fought cancer over the years and many of us have contributed to the wonderful charities that exist to help them.

Why is Dimbleby Cancer Care different?

Why are we asking you to help us now?

Sally's Story

I was just 18 when my father died of cancer in St Thomas' Hospital and his honesty in telling 'his public' that he had cancer resulted in the family receiving thousands of letters enclosing cash and cheques.  One such envelope held a gold wedding ring;  another letter that we all remember read,  "We will all miss you on Monday nights on Panorama. Who am I? Just a roadman from Berkshire.  See you down my road one of these days."

The family set up the Richard Dimbleby Cancer Fund with a professorship in cancer research.  The trust became Dimbleby Cancer Care. This unique organisation instigates new care programmes and research into care which is often then picked up and put into NHS services. For example, my father was stoic but he did complain about the NHS pillows, so his widow made it happen for many patients having hospital treatment to be given soft comforting sausage-shaped pillows, which they can then keep.

Every year Dimbleby Cancer Care carefully selects programmes that directly contribute to caring for patients with cancer.  Please look at the website www.dimblebycancercare.org and find out more about these vital projects and other services.

On the 50th anniversary of my father's death (5/6 June), we will be walking 50km through the night to contribute to the goal of raising £50,000 for Dimbleby Cancer Care.

Jill and I are looking forward to this 50/50/50 challenge.  If you are interested in joining us, the details are on the website - now over to Jill.

Jill's Story

Sally and I have done a couple of walking holidays together (which have been great fun and good exercise). My role on the 50/50/50 walk is to help raise funds for this wonderful cause, and to stop Sally talking too much and slowing down!
