Story
On Saturday 7th August, thirteen of us from the radiotherapy department at the Royal Derby Hospital are taking on the challenge of abseiling 212ft down Derby Cathedral!
1 in 2 UK people will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime. Radiotherapy is the use of radiation to treat cancer, and around 50% of people with cancer will have radiotherapy. Radiotherapy can be used to eliminate cancer, reduce the chance of cancer coming back or relieve symptoms caused by cancer.
Radiotherapy is typically given as an outpatient in the hospital. A course of external beam radiotherapy is usually from Monday to Friday for anything from one to seven weeks. Patients consequently spend a lot of their precious time within our department, therefore we would like to make this experience as easy and relaxing as possible at such a difficult time in patients and their families lives.
Additionally, radiotherapy is highly technical and is a constantly evolving cancer treatment technique, thus we need to upgrade our equipment regularly to ensure we are providing the safest treatment possible.
We would therefore love to raise money to improve the overall experience of our patients. Any support is appreciated! :)
