The reason we are raising money for The British Lung Foundation.
Unfortunately in late 2019 Dean was diagnosed with Pulmonary Fibrosis. This disease scars the lungs internally and makes it very difficult to breath without oxygen. We lost Dean on the 18th May 2021. Unfortunately this disease is becoming more and more apparent however has very little exposure and research.
On diagnosis, Dean was told that most people with pulmonary fibrosis can expect to live between 3 - 5 years. As the disease is so unpredictable in term of the rate in decline, more research is needed to discover a more in-depth look at the actual cause of scars. Such research, would potentially extend the life & also quality of time left, if the correct drug is administered. Currently only 2 medications are available that actually slow the process of the scar tissue increasing,
I.E, the disease progressing. The cause determines which drug works best. More funding may mean more alternative medications. Unfortunately, it is exceptionally rare to pinpoint the exact poison.
In this instance, regarding Dean, there is little to no industrial working history involved. It appeared asbestos was most the likely culprit but as there were so many different compounds and forms, it was a guess at which medication was right for him. Unfortunately, Dean was taken rapidly by this awful debilitating disease. He felt, especially with a pandemic in full swing, there were too many question that couldn’t be answered, mostly due to lack of research.
We want to raise some money in his memory to assist with further research to ensure that people who do unfortunately develop this disease get to spend more time with there friends and family in the future.
Dean was such a big character and had a massive impact on many peoples lives over the years. Anyone who met Dean would be left with a story to tell. He was full of life and had a very unique personality.
He has requested that people donate to this cause instead of buying flowers or gifts this would mean a lot to him to know his passing has benefited others in the future.
