Maggie’s Newcastle is Newcastle School for Boys’ Senior School’s nominated local charity.  Every two years, the boys choose the charities they would like to support from a list of nominations put forward by the pupils themselves.  We are in our second year of supporting of Maggie’s.  As a consequence, I’ve visited Maggie’s on several occasions now and discovered just what a special place it is.  A place of care, support, openness and courage where it is okay to address a condition and its challenges that so often we are uncomfortable in speaking about.  It was for these reasons that when I saw the Tour de Yorkshire cycling challenging in aid of Maggie’s, I knew it was time to get my bike out of the garage . . .
