Story

Hi All,

I recently completed my 100th Marathon, the Housman Hundred.  Of the 100, nine were at London and only 19 were road marathons - as I now do only off-road events, mostly organised by the Long Distance Walkers Association.  Many of these marathons have been longer than 26 miles - three were the South Downs Way 80 miler.  On the weekend of 28/29th May the LDWA held their annual 100 mile event - the 'Housman Hundred' in South Shropshire.

So for my 100th marathon I walked, with some jogging, 100 miles.  I originally said "attempting to" as I have tried this event twice before and got to 62 miles both times.  The route took us through some beautiful countryside, with sections of Mortimer Way, Offa's Dike & the Shropshire Way - which went over the Long Mynd.  It was extrememly tough (they say the toughest 100 there has ever been) with 17,000 feet of climb. I had a bout of tiredness early on Sunday morning & got very slow, but after a short sleep at the next checkpoint I did the next 40 miles with renewed vigour!  My only real problem was blisters on both feet from 82 miles - but with padding & some clean socks at 95 miles I did the last 6 as quickly as I had been at the start!

I am raising money for the Bedford Multiple Sclerosis Therapy Centre as the Lady who started me running subsequently developed MS and the Centre is her life-line.  Without Liz's initial inspiration I would not have done one marathon, never mind 100.
