Story
Welcome to my just giving page, dedicated to a middle aged, overweight bloke and its quest to raise as much money for this fantastic charity as possible. Our family, and many others like us, have been moved by this cruel and unfair illness. Mum was diagnosed some years back with Tumefactive MS and a recent severe relapse has driven me to conceive a challenge for her, for others and for the charity.
Departing on August 1st 2021, the plan is to ride off road (wherever possible) across Mainland Scotland at its widest part. A traverse across the midge infested wilds of Scotland from West to East. Starting from the lighthouse at Ardnamurchan Point to the lighthouse at Boddam nr. Peterhead. The route will take 6 days with a distance of 430km and around similar ascent as the height of Everest...
This route represents a number of significant challenges, not least my physical and mental challenges. The distance and elevation over the planned 6 days will be demanding. From a logistical aspect the navigation and extreme remote terrain, weather, peat bogs, river crossings and the dreaded midges! The planned route avoids roads wherever possible, taking in coastal paths, forestry tracks, estate tracks, rights of way, drovers tracks, hill paths and General Wade’s old military tracks.
As I write this I have only 5 short months to plan and execute the trip. Starting by getting into shape, training for distance, endurance, climbing. Concurrently, mapping out the route in detail, undertaking trips to recce sections where there is no information on it elsewhere.
It’s taken me 40 years to even contemplate a challenge of this magnitude, if we raise enough money, well, I might just commit to making a trip of some description an annual event…..
Dig deep please folks. I’m looking forward to keeping you updated
Thanks, Dave
