Rob was an outstanding athlete before bipolar affected his life. He was too quick for me by the time he was 13 so I passed him onto Cardiff AAC where he thrived on the stiffer competetion and became Welsh School's champion at under 15 and under 17 level on both the track and cross country.
My lasting memory is taking him to Carmarthen, at his insistence, to compete in the 1500 metres Welsh Championship even though his PB was more than 30 seconds slower than the leading Welsh schoolboys boys at that time.
Rob sprinted clear on the final bend to win lowering his PB by a massive 42 seconds.
I was a proud dad that day and I know he will be proud of me if I can run under 1 hour for the 10K.
