On the 1st April 2014 Amanda was diagnosed with stage 4 bowel cancer. She had extensive treatment at Christies in Manchester including two major operations and a prolonged spell of chemotherapy unfortunately in February 2016 she was told that her cancer was terminal. In April 2016 she was back at Christies with a blocked bowel, she remained in hospital for 6 weeks and was told that she would not make her 50th birthday. When Amanda returned home The Hospice at home team based at St Marys Hospice in Ulverston started to visit and over the next 9 months they would manage Amanda's pain relief at home, they showed an unprecedented level of care an professionalism and became part of her extended family. As Amanda's condition became worse the support from the team increased. Amanda had a 3 week stay in her local hospital and spent time in the Hospice but on 11th February 2017 Amanda lost her battle and died peacefully at home. She did make her 50th birthday, November 5th ? the same day as The New York Marathon and she enjoyed Christmas with her family and friends.
Until Amanda developed cancer she and her family had never heard of The Hospice at Home Team but without them her battle against cancer would have been much more difficult .
