Story
I’m spending one night sleeping out under the stars to raise awareness of the 83,000 young people in the UK who sleep rough every night, and to raise money for the Society of St James in Southampton.
SSJ is based in the city centre where I’m a Councillor, and they do a brilliant job of providing housing and support to over 2,500 people each year.
Homelessness is never a straightforward issue, and the team at SSJ help tackle the complex issues surrounding homelessness, including substance/alcohol addiction and mental health problems.
If you can spare a bit of cash, then every penny will go towards providing not only a safe place to sleep, but hugely important things like life-skills classes on healthy eating, budgeting, positive relationships, and how to get back into work or training. For example:
- £5 will fund a healthy meal to those sleeping rough
- £15 will fund transport costs for a two week work placement for a young person
- £30 will cover the costs for a meal and a bed for the night
Young people will get support and build the skills they need to break out of the devastating cycle of homelessness.
So, how much can you give now to help make that happen?
Thanks in advance!
Darren
