This year I'm taking part in the Great North Run for the Alzheimer’s Society. It's the second time for me in fact; I first had a go in 2008 with my brother John. At the time I remember we both said 'never again', but despite all the months of training and the aches and pains it was still an unforgetable experience and the money we raised between us for the Alzheimer’s Society was a great achievement. And so this year I've decided to have another go. For me to take up the challenge again I needed a very big incentive. The Alzheimer’s Society has provided amazing support for my family ever since my Dad was diagnosed with Alzheimer's in 2006. So my reason is simply that I just want to say thank you to the Alzheimer’s Society. The best way I can think of doing that is by trying to raise some cash for them.

Please help by sponsoring me. Any amount is welcome. I’m aiming for at least £400; this pays for one person with dementia to be supported by the Society’s Dementia Advisory service, helping them to understand key information around diagnosis of dementia and what it may mean for them and their family.

In 2008 I completed the Great North Run in a time of 1 hr 56 mins.As an extra challenge this year I am going to try to do it in under 1 hr 50 mins!!

Update 2nd Sept 11: I have just 2 weeks to go now and I my training's been going pretty well. Reached my target of £400 which is fantastic, but obviously it'll be great to receive further donations! Thank you very much to everyone who has sponsored me and for all the messages of support-they really inspire me to keep going!

Update 24th Sept 11: I completed the North Run last Sunday in a time of 1 hr 45 mins. It was a brilliant day. Thank you so much once again for your support. For anyone who still wants to donate please do. Best wishes from Darren
