Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
I am fundraising in prepartion for my VSO placement to Nepal.
VSO is different from most organisations that fight poverty. Instead of sending money or food, it brings people together to share skills and knowledge. Every pound raised brings people together to spark a chain reaction which means that fighting poverty can be sustainable and long-lasting. Their work revolves around six development goals:- disability; education; health and social well-being; HIV & AIDS; participation and secure livelihood.
Nepal is the 15th poorest country in the world, with girls’ education sometimes perceived as a worthless investment. Girls in government schools in poor communities are particularly marginalized, reinforcing generational cycles of poverty.
I will be placed with the Nepal government and partners to pilot the 'Sisters for Sisters' programme, whereby some of the most marginalised Nepali girls, or ‘Little Sisters’, will be provided with academic and emotional support by ‘Big Sisters’, young women who will provide mentorship through schooling and act as positive role models for girls’ education.
So far VSO have sent over 40,000 volunteers of 94 nationalities to work in 37 countries around the world.
· £20 will keep a volunteer midwife for a week in Sierra Leone training nurses to save mothers from dying in childbirth
· £40 pays for a volunteer in Bangladesh to train a group of young people on modern fishing techniques
· £100 pays to teach a co-operative of farmers in Nepal which crops they can farm with limited water use
· £900 can help a social work adviser in Bangladesh to set up and run a six-month training programme so that students become peer-to-peer educators for street children in Dhaka
