Our story began in early October 2013. 

A rash had appeared on Morgan's legs, which appeared on initial observation to be a viral infection.  Our GP confirmed this, requesting a blood test. The initial blood test result backed up the virus theory.  We now had to follow this up with fortnightly blood tests. The second round of blood tests began to indicate a decline in all other cell counts.  We were advised to repeat the test in a few days, which displayed shocking results.  We were phoned at home that evening and asked to pack a bag and go straight to our local hospital.  Morgan had zero immunity, he was at risk of contracting any illness and needed immediate hospitalization and isolation. 

That evening after numerous blood tests, x-rays and examinations the doctor asked me if I would like to go into a private room, as what they were about to tell me would, I quote, "shock me".

Nothing in the world can prepare you for being told your child has either "Leukaemia" or "Aplastic Anaemia" - a rare life threatening condition which is just as deadly as Leukaemia.  The bottom fell out of our world that night.  The next few days passed by in a blur.  We were transferred to the "Teenage Cancer Trust" ward at University College Hospital London and Morgan underwent a bone marrow biopsy to determine the disease he was suffering from.  After an agonising 5 days we were given the diagnosis of "Severe Aplastic Anaemia", or to you and me, that's total bone marrow failure.

We had never heard of "Aplastic Anaemia" before - it is a rare life threatening condition, an auto-immune disease that they believe was triggered by a viral infection.  The body destroys it's own stem cells ceasing any generation of blood products.  As with cancer, there is no answer as to why it can strike and remission can come at any time.  We were told a sibling bone marrow transplant would be our best option, but with a 1 in 4 chance of a match, unfortunately this was not to be.

Morgan has spent the past 18 months experiencing a life that no teenage boy should experience.  He has endured months of weekly tests, transfusions, alternative treatments and endless daily medication.

Morgan is fully aware of the challenges he faces and as heart-breaking as it is, has questioned his own mortality.  His bravery and optimism throughout his battle has been inspirational.  He never complains and will always seek the positive in a situation, even when those around him are struggling.  He has never lost his smile.
