Story
My late Father in Law, Andy Carolan was a modest guy. He never boasted about any of his achievements in life. When he died, on 6th November 2013, I remembered some of the amazing things that he did.
When he was 16, in 1963, he had a pen pal in Southern Germany whom he’d used to write to on a regular basis. He decided that he wanted to meet him; but of course the transport system in those days was nothing like it is today. So he decided to simply get on his bike. For 1300km he pedalled, day and night, sleeping at the side of the road for only a few hours each day.
He rode a heavy steel bike - which he adorned with Union Jack Flags.
In commemoration of his journey and in celebration of my Father in Law's achievements, I will undertake the same journey. Setting off from the same spot in Lancaster, bound for Heidelberg, Germany.
Journey starts July 19th 2014!
