I have been with the cathedral for almost 6 years as one of the vergers. I have had long hair for all the time I have been here and quite enjoy having it as it makes me stand out and if I say so myself I think it suits me. However the cathedral is always in need of repair, and one of the most pressing concerns at this time is the turrets at the west end of the cathedral which are in desperate need of structural work. The cathedral works departments are about half way through the work but they still have a long way to go, and so are the funds to finish the work. The cathedral still needs to raise over £2 million for this important work. So I have taken the hard decision, to get sponsored to cut my hair off in the hope that all the money raised my benefit future generations. By leaving them such a inspiring and magnificent link to there past through the history of the building and our future through the work that the cathedral inspires.
