Story
Thank you for donating to Alyn Hospital.
This is a very specific request for particular items of
equipment.
THE HOSPITAL
Alyn is an inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation unit for
the most severely disabled children in Israel. About 1/3 of the inpatients are
ventilator-dependant. In spite of this, they are supported to take part in
education, social activities and sports. It should come as no surprise that
these very vulnerable children (who in many parts of the world would never have
been alive at all) do sometimes come down with very severe illness. From time
to time, things get very serious, very quickly and resuscitation becomes
necessary.
A LUCKY OUTCOME
This happened recently. A young child required immediate
resuscitation. Fortunately the expert staff and equipment were to hand and the
outcome was good. One factor to which the success was attributed was the ease
with which medicines could be delivered to the child’s circulation. The hospital
had an EZ-IO Intraosseous kit on loan. It allowed immediate drug delivery to
bone marrow, when inserting an intravenous cannula into tiny veins in a
collapsed child who had previously had their veins used many times before was
going to be just about impossible. But the equipment was only on loan and has
had to be returned. And it was also lucky that it was located in the same
location within the hospital.
WHAT IS NEEDED
To give other children in future the same chance, an EZ-IO
kit will be needed for each location – Five in all. Each costs around £750 after
discounts. By medical standards, this is a small amount, but Alyn has no spare
cash at all following Covid. In the UK, this equipment is standard in all acute
hospitals and ambulance services.
All we need is 500 people to give £7.50 each and the problem is solved. Will
you help? To get an idea of what we are talking about see this teaching video: https://bit.ly/3iQMZsO Of course, we may not
get 500 donors. So, if life has been generous to you, you may wish to donate
more. But, be in no doubt, a gift of £7.50 will be amazingly welcome.
