Story

Please read the bold writing below for a short update of how we got on. Thank you.

On the 18th and 19th of June this year, I will be riding the RBLR 1000 (1000 miles on a motorbike) with my daughter as company on the pillion seat of our BMW R1150GS. This event is organised by the Royal British Legion Riders Branch, in aid of the Royal British Legion and the Poppy Appeal, with  the challenge being to ride 1000 miles all in one go. If a rider completes the route in 24 hours they may gain entry (subject to scrutiny)  to the UK branch of the Iron Butt Association. The event starts from 5:30am at Squires Café, South Milford in Leeds and we intend taking the Northern Clockwise route which includes the compulsory checkpoints of: Birch Services (M62) - Fort William – Wick – Edinburgh – Berwick - Squires Café.

You can find out more information about the event at www.rblr1000.co.uk. If there are any keen motorcyclists up for the challenge you can still register to take part up until the 4th June on the rblr1000 website.

Well, we actually finished in good time - and had an absolutely great time doing it. We went up to Leeds on the Friday night ready for the 8pm briefing, and stayed in a nearby hotel. We set the alarm for 5.15am and got to the start point and on our way at 6am. The roads north of Glasgow up to Fort William were fantastic, even if it was raining a lot of the way, and then all the way up past Loch Lomond and Loch Ness. The sun came out for a few hours as we neared Wick, and after a short tea break, we headed back south in convoy with 9 other bikes towards Inverness, then stopping off briefly for a refuel at Aviemore. There was then more rain as we made good progress through the Cairngorms - another fantastic bit of road - and on to Edinburgh. A short leg over to Berwick for another fill up at about 01.30am, where a kind man (David Hulme) donated £20 when he heard what we were doing, before heading back down the A1 to Leeds again. The last couple of hours were really hard work, and we had to make a nother stop for a coffee and to liven up a bit. We crossed the finish line at 04.18am on the Sunday morning to a big clap from all the organisers, making it a totalof 22hrs and 18mins. We intended pitching our tent, to get a few hours sleep before doing another 130 miles home, but we didn't fancy it getting it all mucky in the miserable weather, so instead we just hung around chatting until the Cafe opened at 07.30 and then tucked into a nice 'full english'. We headed off after this, but only managed to get 30miles before we were really struggling to concentrate - and especially after Charlotte headbutted me from behind when she nodded off! We stopped at the next service station and headed in to the coffee shop - didn't buy anything - but just crashed out on the nice comfy sofas in there - and woke up almost an hour later! A quick blast home then finished off an amazing experience, and we had a lovely greeting waiting from Olly when we got there.

Thank you so much to all the people who sponsored us. Together you raised about £550 for a fantastic charity. Dan & Charly.
