I love running and racing all distances including half marathons like the Great North Run (GNR).
Dave Greaves, my friend's 6'6 little brother, also used to love endurance sport having spent a year training before completing an Iron Man (marathon distance swim, then cycle then run) in 2015. Dave was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease the same year and he fought it in a brave and inspiring way. Dave died in 2016, 15 months after being diagnosed, aged 31.
MND attacks the motor neurones - the nerves in the brain and spinal column which control voluntary movement - gradually reducing the ability to move your arms, walk, talk, eat, swallow and breath. There is no known cure.
I'm joining the 2Fingers2MND Fundraising Team again (click link at bottom of the page for more info), which Dave started in advance of the 2016 GNR. Together with some of Dave's friends and family, we're running this year's race (I'll be in a spiderman morph suit) to fundraise for much needed research into this horrible disease which affects 1 in 300 people in the UK.
