Story

Hi and thanks for visiting my page.

If you know me then i dont need to tell you about myself!!! If u dont then let me introduce myself. My name is Dan Jarman and I live in Leominster, Herefordshire. Im 26 years old and a golf professional based at Sapey Golf Club, Nr Worcester (www.sapeygolf.co.uk). Ive spent years sat on the sofa watching the London marathon on my tv. Every year saying to myself and everyone else that next year i will apply. But always next year never came!!!! Well this year is different, im in training and really looking forward to running the Virgin Londom marathon on Sunday April 25th.

Ive always liked to think of myself as a highly trained professional athlete, but in reality maybe athlete is the correct term!!! Not everyone gets the chance to run the London marathon, its an extremely special event which helps to raise millions of pounds for very deserving charities. To me this is the most exciting bit about the experience. The charity that i will be running in aid of is the prostate cancer charity. Its an extremely worthy charity which works tirelessly to fight prostate cancer on every front- through research, support, information, campaigning and raising awareness. In the UK around 32,000 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer each year. The prostate cancer charity was founded in 1996 and its now the leading voluntary organisation working with people affected by prostate cancer. They really do a fantastic job and work so hard to help fight against prostate cancer and support the sufferers of this. For further information on prostate cancer and what the prostate cancer charity does please feel free to visit there website (www.prostate-cancer.org.uk).

Not only have i decided to run for this charity because of the great work they do, but also because its a charity close to my heart. My grandad who was a major influence in my life was diagnosed with prostate cancer which unfortunately spread to other parts of his body, and unfortunately lost his battle with it to the sadness of everyone who new him and loved him. At Sapey golf club we have numerous members who are suffering or have suffered from prostate cancer. So the prostate cancer charity is very close to our hearts here at the golf club as well. The owner of Sapey golf club Jim Preece has suffered from prostate cancer and since then has worked extremely hard to raise funds to be donated towards the charity. It really is an important charity to the golf club but also Jim and the members of Sapey. Jim has raised awareness to the members and other visitors about prostate cancer and really does do all he can to support the charity. So for me these are huge reasons for me to help do all i can to support this worthy cause.

Below is a statement written by Jim Preece on his battle with prostate cancer and what he has done to contribute towards the charity.

The history of Jim Preece and his fight with prostate cancer

Having neglected to go to the doctor for repeated night forays to the toilet for so long I eventually plucked up courage in 2000 to go and be checked out. My own local G.P felt that there may be some problems with my prostate and arranged for me to go to see a specialist in Worcester, Mr T.Chen and his diagnosis worried me as he said I should go to Birmingham Q.E hospital for a biopsy which proved that there was cancer present. After various tests radium treatment was administered every working day for weeks on end. This seemed to put this right but after 4 years the cancer had returned so I then had the comparatively new treatment of cryotherapy the side effects of which were quite horrendous.

As a result of my near scrape I became interested in fund raising for the K.P.C.S.G (Kidderminster Prostate Cancer Support Group) and I organise a special golf tournament each year at Sapey golf club. The first golf event was held in August 2001 and up to this date we have raised and distributed some £35,000 to help the afflicted and dependants especially the widows group.

Please donate generously in the form of sponsorship for Dan Jarman who is one of the golf professionals at Sapey golf club who has been accepted to run in London marathon on 25th April 2010.

All money raised will be donated to the national prostate cancer charity.

Please give generously

Jim Preece

Thank you for your time to take a look at my page. I am working hard to raise £2000 which will all go towards prostate cancer. Myself and the prostate cancer charity would be extremely grateful if you could donate any money towards this worthy charity. Please help support us. Every penny counts!

26 miles is going to hurt really badly, but it will all be worth it if i can reach my target!
